Busan International Film Festival to Host Alfonso Cuarón and Feature European Women+ Filmmakers
The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is set to host an array of cinematic talent, highlighted by the first-ever appearance of two-time Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón in Korea. Concurrently, the festival will dedicate a special segment, titled “Europe! Voices of Women+ in Film,” to celebrating the contributions of nine European female and genderqueer directors. This initiative, a collaboration with European Film Promotion (EFP), aims to boost the international visibility of these distinctive voices in cinema.
Cuarón, renowned for his directorial achievements in films like “Gravity” (2013) and “Roma” (2018), which garnered him two Best Director Oscars, will participate in BIFF's opening festivities. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage with him in a comprehensive discussion about his distinctive visual storytelling and directorial philosophy. A special IMAX presentation of “Gravity,” a film he co-wrote with his son Jonás Cuarón, is also scheduled. Jonás Cuarón will introduce his latest work, “Campeón Gabacho,” an immigrant narrative produced under the Esperanto Filmoj banner, at its Asian premiere in the World Cinema section, followed by a Q&A session.
The "Europe! Voices of Women+ in Film" program encompasses a diverse collection of nine films, ranging from historical dramas and documentaries to contemporary narratives, all exploring themes of freedom, memory, and family. Notably, four of these films mark the directors’ feature debuts, signifying a generational shift within European cinema. Highlighted works include May el-Toukhy’s “Woman Unknown,” a Golden Lion recipient at Venice, and acclaimed entries like Sandra Wollner’s “Everytime” and Margherita Ferrari’s debut “Föa – Once Upon a Future.” Five of the featured directors, including el-Toukhy and Judith Godrèche, will be present at Busan to engage with audiences and industry professionals. This program, supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme of the European Union and various national film organizations, seeks to empower underrepresented voices and foster new opportunities for emerging female+ filmmakers. The festival will unfold from October 6-15, with the Asian Contents & Film Market running from October 10-13.
