Recognizing Cinematic Achievements of Rima Das
Indian filmmaker Rima Das, hailing from Assam, is celebrated for her intimate storytelling approach, often exploring themes of human resilience and the profound connection with nature. Her films have garnered international acclaim, participating in over 150 festivals and securing more than 75 awards. Notable works include "Village Rockstars" (2017), "Bulbul Can Sing" (2018), and "Tora’s Husband" (2022). "Village Rockstars" notably earned the Best Feature Film award at India's National Film Awards and was the country's official entry for the Academy Awards in 2018. More recently, "Village Rockstars 2" received the Kim Jiseok Award at BIFF's 2024 edition, and "Not a Hero" earned a Crystal Bear special mention in Berlin. Das is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with prior experience on festival juries.
Shan Zuolong's Impactful Journey in Film Production
Chinese producer Shan Zuolong has a distinguished career marked by his involvement in critically acclaimed films. His early work includes "Kaili Blues" (2015), which received the best emerging director prize at Locarno, and "Long Day’s Journey Into Night" (2018), featured in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section. His subsequent productions, such as "Love Is a Gun" (2023), which won Venice's Lion of the Future for best debut feature, and "The Botanist" (2025), a Grand Prix winner in Berlin's Generation section, further highlight his discerning eye for talent. "Resurrection" (2025) secured the Special Prize at Cannes and the Busan Award for Artistic Contribution at BIFF. Shan became a member of the Producers Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2026.
Shim Eun-kyung's Acclaimed Acting Career
Korean actor Shim Eun-kyung has received widespread recognition for her performances, sweeping best actress honors at numerous top Korean ceremonies for her roles in "Sunny" (2011) and "Miss Granny" (2014). Her portrayal in "Miss Granny" earned her awards at the Baeksang Arts Awards, the Chunsa International Film Festival, and the Buil Film Awards. She also established a successful career in Japan, becoming the first Korean actor to win the Japan Academy Film Prize for best actress for her work in "The Journalist" (2019). Her latest film, "Two Seasons, Two Strangers" (2025), was awarded the Golden Leopard at Locarno, also earning her the Kinema Junpo Best Actress Award.
The Significance of the New Currents Award
The New Currents Award is dedicated to recognizing debut feature films screened within BIFF’s Competition or Vision sections, offering a substantial cash prize of KRW20 million (approximately $14,400 USD). This award is crucial for providing a platform and financial support to emerging Asian directors, helping to launch their careers and bring their unique cinematic visions to a broader audience.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 6-15 at the Busan Cinema Center and various other venues across the city. Concurrently, the 21st Asian Contents & Film Market will be held from October 10-13, serving as a vital hub for industry professionals to connect, collaborate, and explore new opportunities in the dynamic world of Asian cinema.
