California AG Rob Bonta Defends Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Settlement
California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has recently addressed concerns regarding the antitrust agreement facilitating the consolidation of Paramount and Warner Bros. During a Monday press conference lasting 45 minutes, Bonta articulated that the accord incorporates provisions for independent oversight and is anticipated to stimulate employment growth within the entertainment sector. However, the agreement omits the phrase "robust structural remedies," which Bonta had previously stated as a primary objective when the lawsuit was initiated in July. While advocating for the strength of the deal's outcomes, he conceded that it did not fully align with his ideal resolution. The Attorney General clarified that preventing the merger was not the focus of their settlement efforts, navigating increasing external pressures from figures like Governor Gavin Newsom and Xavier Becerra, as well as industry groups and labor unions who sought a resolution.
Bonta minimized the impact of these pressures, asserting that his office's legal successes compelled Paramount to make substantial concessions.
