Cannes Award-Winning Nepali Film 'Elephants in the Fog' Secures Extensive Global Distribution Deals

This news comes as the film garners attention at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, further solidifying its global presence and critical recognition.
Award-Winning Nepali Cinema Finds Global Audience
On September 13, 2026, Best Friend Forever announced that Abinash Bikram Shah’s 'Elephants in the Fog' has finalized distribution deals across ten international territories. This critically praised film, which previously earned the Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prize, is also Nepal's official submission for the international feature category at the Academy Awards. The announcement coincides with the film’s screening at the esteemed Toronto Film Festival.
Key distribution agreements include MetFilm Distribution for the U.K., Filmin in Spain, Vedette in Benelux, and Trigon in Switzerland. Additionally, Lev Cinema will handle distribution in Israel, Jayantii in Australia, EFAR Films in India, PT Falcon in Indonesia, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines. An inflight entertainment deal with Silk Route further expands the film's reach. These new partnerships build upon previously established deals with Arizona Distribution and Les Valseurs Distribution in France, missingFILMs in Germany and Austria, Imovision in Brazil, and The Tea Folks Films for local distribution in Nepal. Negotiations are also progressing for a pan-Latin America deal, with advanced discussions for North American rights currently underway.
The film's narrative centers on Pirati, the matriarch of a Kinnar community residing in a Nepalese forest. She embarks on a quest to find one of her daughters who vanished during a nightly patrol against wild elephants. 'Elephants in the Fog' is a strong contender at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, having received nominations for best film, best director, and best performance. The production was a collaborative effort by Underground Talkies Nepal, Les Valseurs, and Die Gesellschaft DGS, with co-production support from Enquadramento Produções, Bubbles Project, Zischlermann Filmproduktion, Storm Films, Jayantii Creations, and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel & ZDF/ARTE. Director Shah is also known for his short film 'Lori,' which earned a Special Mention at the Cannes Short Film Competition in 2022.
