Celebrated Filmmaker Zhang Yimou to Preside Over Busan Festival Competition Jury
The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is set to embark on a momentous edition, featuring an distinguished jury panel for its competitive segment, with celebrated Chinese director Zhang Yimou at the helm as jury president. This year marks the second iteration of this prestigious Competition section, amplifying the festival's global standing.
The festival's elevated status, now recognized as a FIAPF A-list event, places it alongside other cinematic giants like Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, and Toronto. This acknowledgment brings with it a significant change: the recipient of the Best Film honor will automatically gain eligibility for the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category, underscoring Busan's growing influence in the international film landscape.
A Distinguished Panel of Cinematic Visionaries
The esteemed director Zhang Yimou, a figure of immense influence in world cinema, brings a wealth of experience and accolades to his role as jury president. His illustrious career is marked by triumph at Europe's premier film festivals, including a Golden Bear from Berlin for his inaugural work, “Red Sorghum,” two Golden Lions from Venice for “The Story of Qiu Ju” and “Not One Less,” and the Grand Prix of the Jury at Cannes for “To Live.” His cinematic achievements extend to multiple Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, and he has also notably orchestrated the opening and closing ceremonies of both the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Zhang's historical connection with Busan dates back to 2010 when “Under the Hawthorn Tree” inaugurated the festival.
Joining Zhang on the jury are a diverse array of international film talents, each contributing unique perspectives and expertise. Bi Gan, whose film “Resurrection” was featured in last year's BIFF Competition and secured the Artistic Contribution prize, is celebrated for his critically acclaimed works “Kaili Blues” and “Long Day's Journey Into Night.” Korean actor Moon Choi, who has transitioned into directing and producing, was recognized as Actor of the Year at BIFF in 2018 for “Our Body” and is involved in this year's “Bedford Park.” Japanese director Ishikawa Kei, an alumnus of Poland's Łódź Film School, garnered international attention with his debut “Gukoroku – Traces of Sin” at Venice, and his film “A Man” closed Busan after its Venice premiere, earning numerous Japan Academy Film Prizes. The panel further includes July Jung, the first South Korean woman director to have all three of her features “A Girl at My Door,” “Next Sohee,” and “Dora” invited to Cannes; Vietnamese producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, a veteran of three decades in the industry, known for her involvement in films like “Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories” and “The Third Wife”; and Kazakhstani actor Samal Yeslyamova, who received Best Actress at Cannes for “Ayka” and has a long-standing association with BIFF, including prior jury service and a role in a past opening film.
The Stakes and Recognition for Excellence
The distinguished jury at the 31st Busan International Film Festival is tasked with the critical evaluation of 13 films vying for top honors in the Competition lineup. This year's competition holds significant prestige, especially with the festival's recent elevation to a FIAPF A-list status, signifying its place among the world's most prominent film events. The Busan Award, encompassing categories for best film, best director, special jury prize, best actor, and artistic contribution, offers a substantial total prize pool of KRW110 million (approximately $80,350 USD). More importantly, the winning film in the best film category will now automatically qualify for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards, a recognition that significantly amplifies the exposure and impact for the selected work.
This year's festival, running from October 6-15, will unfold across the Busan Cinema Center and various locations throughout the vibrant city of Busan. Concurrently, the 21st Asian Contents & Film Market is scheduled to take place from October 10-13, serving as a vital platform for industry professionals to engage in networking, co-production, and distribution discussions. The convergence of these events underscores Busan's pivotal role in fostering cinematic talent and facilitating the exchange of diverse narratives from across Asia and beyond, further solidifying its position as a global hub for film and cultural exchange.
