Celebrating Three Decades of Pokémon: A Look at the Upcoming Art Book Collection
When Pocket Monsters Red and Green debuted in Japan in 1996, no one foresaw the immense global impact these games about capturing and battling mythical creatures would have. Three decades later, Pokémon continues its remarkable expansion. The franchise now boasts over 100 video games, more than 150 trading card sets, numerous animated films and television series, and extensive collaborations with major brands like Lego and McDonald's. As Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary, Game Freak is marking this significant milestone with a special tribute. Alongside limited-edition Lego sets, plush toys, and new trading card releases, Game Freak has quietly unveiled another major addition to the anniversary festivities: an official art book series.
Game Freak has announced a collection of three expansive art books, each designed to honor a distinct period of Pokémon's 30-year legacy. The covers for these volumes, revealed earlier this week, fittingly mirror the original trio of games that launched the franchise: red, green, and blue. All three books are scheduled for release in Japan on December 18, 2026, priced at 5,500 yen (approximately $35) each. Collectively, these three books will present a 1,500-page visual chronicle of the Pokémon games. While there has been no official confirmation regarding English translations or a potential U.S. release date, Game Freak has specified which game generations each volume will encompass. The first book will cover the early eras, spanning Generations 1 through 4, including titles such as Pokémon Red and Green, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Platinum, and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The second book will highlight Generations 5 through 7, encompassing the Nintendo DS/3DS era, with games like Pokémon Black and White and their sequels Black 2 and White 2, Pokémon X and Y, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. The final volume in the series will spotlight more recent releases, including Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, Pokémon Sword and Shield (along with its DLC), Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (and its DLC), and Pokémon Legends: Z-A (and its DLC).
These art books, whether purchased individually or as a complete set, are anticipated to feature a wealth of artwork and assets from the games, previously unseen conceptual materials, and exclusive interviews with the developers at Game Freak.
