Paradox Interactive recently launched the "Expanded Edition" of its popular city-building simulation game, Cities: Skylines, for the Nintendo Switch 2. This revamped version promises an elevated gaming experience for players, featuring enhanced graphics, optimized performance, and a comprehensive suite of new tools. It aims to provide Nintendo Switch 2 users with a definitive way to immerse themselves in the intricate world of urban development.

Cities: Skylines is an in-depth single-player simulation where players assume the role of a mayor, tasked with transforming an undeveloped plot of land into a bustling metropolis. The core gameplay involves designing road networks, constructing residential, commercial, and industrial zones, and ensuring the smooth operation of essential services like power and water to support a growing population.

Unleashing Urban Potential: Key Enhancements of the Expanded Edition

The fundamental mechanics of the game remain, but the "Expanded Edition" introduces several key improvements designed to streamline city management. Even players familiar with the original 2018 Nintendo Switch release will find a wealth of new content and optimizations in this updated version.

Vastly Expanded Cityscapes

One of the most significant changes in the "Expanded Edition" is the dramatic increase in potential city size. While the original Switch version limited players to nine building tiles (approximately 1.92 km x 1.92 km per tile), the new edition expands this to a staggering 25 tiles. This nearly triples the available construction area, enabling players to conceptualize and build truly colossal megacities.

However, this increased scale demands meticulous planning. As cities grow and populations swell, managing infrastructure becomes more complex. Players must proactively address issues such as traffic congestion and public transportation bottlenecks to maintain efficiency. The game offers diverse urban planning possibilities, from creating vibrant tourist destinations with car-free downtowns to establishing sprawling industrial complexes. The "Expanded Edition" also includes a Map Editor, empowering players to design and customize their own terrains, adjust sea levels, and add water sources before construction begins. This feature allows for the recreation of real-world cities or the development of entirely imaginative landscapes.

Refined Control and Customization

The depth of Cities: Skylines is a major draw, yet managing its various systems and menus can be challenging. The "Expanded Edition" addresses this with refined controls and improved tools specifically tailored for the Nintendo Switch 2. User experience enhancements include precision placement, distance indicators, and updated snapping options, all contributing to a more intuitive building process.

Players now have greater control over atmospheric conditions, with the ability to alter the time of day, environmental coloring, and levels of rain and fog at any moment. A quick selection tool allows for swift swapping between essential assets and object duplication, reducing the need to navigate multiple menus.

A highly requested feature, keyboard and mouse support, has also been integrated into the "Expanded Edition," offering an alternative to controller input. Additionally, new performance options are available: players can choose between a "Performance" mode targeting 60 frames per second with upscaling and adjusted quality, or a "Quality" mode prioritizing visual fidelity at 30 frames per second.

Comprehensive Content Inclusions

Living up to its name, the "Expanded Edition" comes bundled with four major expansions. "After Dark" introduces dynamic nighttime city life, with active entertainment venues. "Snowfall" focuses on winter scenarios, adding snow visuals and necessary heating and transit systems. "Green Cities" allows for the development of eco-conscious neighborhoods. "Sunset Harbor" integrates a fishing industry and maritime hub management.

Furthermore, six additional Content Creator Packs and Radio Stations are included, such as Map Pack 3, Country Road, Pearls from the East, Deep Focus Radio, Carols, Candles & Candy, and Match Day. These additions bring a variety of new elements, from diverse mountain landscapes to festive holiday music.

Loyalty Rewards for Existing Players

The "Expanded Edition" was released on the eShop on October 28th, priced at £41.49 / $49.99 / €41.00. Owners of the original Cities: Skylines on Nintendo Switch are eligible for a 70% loyalty discount. To avail of this offer, players must use the same account that purchased the initial game, and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout. This loyalty offer is valid until April 28th, 2027.

The launch of Cities: Skylines - Expanded Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 signifies a significant step forward for console city-building simulations. The blend of increased scale, refined controls, and extensive included content provides both veteran players and newcomers with a robust and immersive platform to unleash their urban planning creativity. This release demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the gaming experience, offering more control, more content, and ultimately, more potential for crafting magnificent digital cities.

This enhanced edition encourages players to think strategically about urban development, considering how each decision impacts the city's growth and the well-being of its inhabitants. It's a reminder that good planning, even in a virtual world, is crucial for long-term success and sustainability.
