Disney has announced a significant strategic move, appointing Karandeep Anand, the former CEO of AI chatbot company Character.AI, as its inaugural Chief Technology Officer. This appointment, effective October 2, signals Disney's intensified focus on technology as a core driver for its entertainment offerings and overall business growth. Disney's New Technology Era: Karandeep Anand Takes Helm as CTO Amidst AI Ambitions

On September 18, 2026, Disney revealed its decision to bring Karandeep Anand aboard as its first Chief Technology Officer. This historic appointment comes under the leadership of Josh D’Amaro, Disney's CEO since March of the same year, who is keen on positioning the entertainment giant as a technology-forward enterprise. Anand, who will hold the title of Senior Executive Vice President, will report directly to D’Amaro. His responsibilities will encompass overseeing the company’s enterprise technology, infrastructure, data, AI platforms, and product and engineering initiatives.

Notably, this collaboration follows a recent encounter between Disney and Character.AI. Approximately a year prior to this announcement, Disney had issued a cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI, accusing the generative AI chatbot firm of copyright infringement related to its iconic characters. Character.AI subsequently complied with Disney's request. Despite this past legal dispute, the current appointment underscores a mutual understanding and a strategic alignment of interests, with Disney even stating that “a number of Character.AI’s technical team” are expected to transition to Disney alongside Anand.

Before his tenure at Character.AI, Anand served as president and chief product officer at the financial technology company Brex. His career also includes significant leadership positions at Meta's Facebook, where he served as VP of ads and business products. Earlier, he spent 15 impactful years at Microsoft, contributing to the development of the Azure cloud-computing platform in various senior product and engineering roles.

Josh D’Amaro emphasized Anand's unique qualifications, stating, “Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI, and will be a vital addition to Disney’s senior leadership team as we further our three priorities: great storytelling as our North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney.” D’Amaro further praised Anand as “an expert builder and strategist, technical and product-minded, with sharp instincts for what fans actually want,” highlighting his enthusiasm for Disney and his vision for integrating technology with creative endeavors.

Anand expressed his excitement about joining Disney, remarking, “I’ve admired Disney my entire life for how it blends unforgettable storytelling with the latest technology to constantly push the boundaries of what entertainment can be. I’m honored to join a team with such extraordinary creative talent, and I look forward to building on the company’s impressive technology capabilities to help Disney connect fans worldwide with its beloved stories and characters in new and innovative ways.”

This new role marks a structural shift within Disney, which previously did not have a dedicated CTO position. The company recently promoted Adam Smith, formerly the highest-ranking technology executive overseeing product and technology for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, to chairman of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment. This restructuring, coupled with Anand's appointment, solidifies D’Amaro’s vision of strengthening direct relationships with fans and positioning Disney+ as a central digital hub for a more connected Disney experience.

Anand's academic credentials include a computer science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, and a marketing and strategy certification from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

This strategic hire by Disney is a clear indicator of the increasing importance of advanced technology, particularly AI, in the entertainment industry. The move suggests a future where immersive digital experiences and personalized content delivery will be paramount.
