Industry experts are actively working to clarify artificial intelligence's precise meaning and utility within the entertainment sector, moving past generalized notions of its capabilities. Mira Line, Google's Vice President of Technology and Society, emphasized the need to delineate AI's functions, stating that the term itself is currently overly expansive and requires a more granular understanding of its applications.

This discussion took place during the "Entertainment and Media in the Age of AI" panel at Variety’s Entertainment and Tech Summit, where executives from major companies like Netflix, Lionsgate, Hasbro, Teads, and Adobe converged to explore AI's current and future impact. A key theme was fostering creator trust through transparent frameworks for AI integration, exemplified by Netflix's public guidelines for generative AI use in approximately 300 programs. Furthermore, initiatives such as the “Human Generative Workflows” paper, co-developed by Line, aim to define AI's technical vocabulary and clarify pathways for achieving copyright protection for AI-assisted productions.

Addressing the common misunderstandings about AI, panel participants highlighted that the technology is far more complex than simple prompting tools like ChatGPT, particularly for high-quality productions. Companies like Adobe categorize AI functions into "assistive," "corrective," and "generative" to better guide users. Additionally, protecting intellectual property is paramount; Hasbro, through its Sixth Wall studio, employs proprietary safeguards for AI replicas of beloved characters like Optimus Prime, ensuring brand integrity while exploring new interactive experiences. The consensus among leaders is that AI should empower creators to tell more compelling stories and solve production challenges, rather than serving as a mere technological trend, ultimately democratizing tools and inviting diverse talent into the creative landscape.

The integration of AI into the entertainment sphere offers immense potential to redefine creative boundaries and streamline production. By embracing clarity, establishing trust with creators, and developing robust frameworks for intellectual property, the industry can harness AI as a powerful tool for innovation.
