Jamie Dornan Champions Northern Irish Talent in "Nostalgie"

A Strategic Collaboration for Awards Season

Renowned actor Jamie Dornan, celebrated for his performances in films like "Belfast," "The Tourist," and "Fifty Shades of Grey," has officially taken on the role of executive producer for Kathryn Ferguson's short film, "Nostalgie." This significant collaboration comes as the film, already an IFTA winner and BAFTA nominee, qualifies for the Oscar race, particularly eyeing a spot in the best live-action short film category.

Exploring Artistry and Audience Connection in "Nostalgie"

The film delves into the intricate themes of artistic ownership and the dynamic interplay between musicians and their fan bases, presented through a darkly comedic lens. It stars Aidan Gillen, recognized for his work in "Game of Thrones" and "The Wire," as a fading pop icon. The soundtrack features original compositions and a score by BRIT Award winner Dan Smith, the frontman of Bastille, with cinematography expertly handled by two-time Oscar nominee Robbie Ryan.

Dornan's Dedication to Homeland Cinema

For Belfast-born Dornan, his involvement in "Nostalgie" is deeply personal, driven by a desire to foster local filmmaking talent. He expressed his eagerness to support productions from his home region, stating that the opportunity to collaborate with a predominantly Belfast-based team on "Nostalgie" was an obvious choice.

Praise for Ferguson's Unique Vision

Dornan commended director Kathryn Ferguson for her remarkable ability to capture the raw and tribal essence of Northern Ireland's complex socio-political landscape while weaving a narrative that is profoundly human and universally resonant. He lauded her talent and vision for achieving such a delicate balance in storytelling.

Narrative Heart: A Washed-Up Star's Unexpected Revival

Based on a short story by Belfast author Wendy Erskine, "Nostalgie" centers on Drew Lord Haig, a former 1980s pop star portrayed by Gillen. When invited to perform at a centenary event in Belfast, Haig hopes to reclaim his past glory, only to discover that one of his long-forgotten songs has been reinterpreted as an unexpected anthem, acquiring a meaning far beyond his original intent. The film thoughtfully explores the universal dilemma faced by artists when their creations evolve beyond their control.

A Stellar Cast and Production Team

The film also features performances by Stacey Gregg, known for "Bad Sisters" and "Mary & George," Michael Smiley from "Bad Sisters," Jessica Reynolds of "Kneecap," Seamus O’Hara from "An Irish Goodbye," and Sean Kearns of "The Boxer." "Nostalgie" was produced by Kath Mattock, Marie-Thérèse Mackle, and Marc Robinson, with Globe Originals presenting in collaboration with Hopefield and Film4. Stille Productions and Tara Films served as the production companies.

Kathryn Ferguson's Diverse Directorial Journey

"Nostalgie" marks Kathryn Ferguson's debut in narrative drama shorts. Her previous works include the acclaimed documentary "Nothing Compares," focusing on Sinéad O’Connor, and her second feature, "Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes." She is currently engaged in the production of "Matrescence," a project that has garnered support from the Sundance Institute.
