Marrakech Ignites Silver Screen with Global Premieres and Renowned Features

Curtain Rises: 'The Debut' Headlines Opening Night

Jesse Eisenberg's recent film, "The Debut," has been selected to inaugurate the 23rd Marrakech International Film Festival. This eagerly awaited picture features Julianne Moore in the role of a reserved homemaker who embarks on an unexpected journey into community theater, ultimately transforming into an impassioned Method actor. Eisenberg is anticipated to attend the non-competitive gala screening.

Gala Presentations: A Stellar Ensemble

The festival's gala events will also include the regional premiere of Luca Guadagnino's "Artificial," a film that delves into the origins of OpenAI's founder, portrayed by Andrew Garfield. Additionally, veteran director James Gray will return with his crime thriller, "Paper Tiger," starring Adam Driver and Miles Teller, further enriching the festival's prestigious lineup. Other world premieres in the gala section include Fellipe Barbosa’s "Leila et la nuit," inspired by Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui, and Omar Hilal’s "His Weakest Creatures," uniting Egyptian stars Ahmed Helmy and Hend Sabry. John Turturro will be present to introduce Noah Segan’s "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York," while Laïla Marrakchi’s Oscar-entry "Strawberries" will also be featured.

Official Competition: Spotlighting Fresh Voices

The Official Competition is designed to spotlight burgeoning talent within the global cinematic landscape, featuring 14 debut and sophomore films vying for the coveted Étoile d’Or award. A distinguished jury, presided over by actor Marion Cotillard, will adjudicate this section. Three of these competitive entries will have their world premieres: Yassine Marco Marroccu’s Sahara-set drama "Alkebulan," Farzad Samsami’s "Waves of Silence" — a poignant drama about migrant shipwrecks set in Morocco, and "Cairo Shadows," a political thriller exploring the Coptic Christian community in Egypt, directed by Rani Massalha e Salem Massalha. Other notable entries include "Ben’imana," "Chronicles From the Siege," "Congo Boy," "Furies," "House of the Wind," "Marie Madeleine," "Our Share of Sand," "Sad Girlz," and "The World Before."

Horizons Section: A Panorama of World Cinema

The Horizons section is set to showcase 21 films, celebrated by the festival organizers for their embodiment of the dynamism and breadth of international cinema. This segment will feature acclaimed works from renowned global directors such as Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s "All of a Sudden," Cristian Mungiu’s "Fjord," Pawel Pawlikowski’s "Fatherland," Hirokazu Kore-eda’s "Look Back," and Nanni Moretti’s "It Happened One Night." The section also highlights Arab cinema, presenting Mohammed Hammad’s psychological thriller "Safe Exit," Sara Ishaq’s "The Station" (set in Yemen), and Ahmed Hassouna’s Gaza-based documentary "Citizen Osama."

Moroccan Panorama: Local Stories and Global Connections

The Moroccan Panorama section will feature six distinct cinematic works, commencing with Tala Hadid’s "Bardi," a documentary chronicling a nomadic brotherhood of horsemen traversing Morocco. In total, the festival will present 11 Moroccan films spread across its various sections, in addition to three productions filmed within Morocco, underscoring the nation's rich cinematic contributions.
