Mercedes-Benz Patent Reveals Innovative Snow Removal System for Vehicles

Mercedes-Benz is exploring an innovative solution to a common winter inconvenience: snow entering a vehicle's cabin upon opening the doors. The luxury automaker has secured a patent for a system that uses compressed air nozzles strategically placed on the car's roof to clear snow from crucial areas, specifically above the doors. This development aims to significantly improve the user experience for drivers in regions prone to heavy snowfall, minimizing mess and potential damage to upholstery and sensitive electronic components within the car's interior.

This pioneering snow-clearing mechanism, detailed in a German patent published on October 29, 2026, was first brought to light by Car Moses. The design outlines a network of nozzles integrated into the roof structure, likely near where roof rails would typically be situated. These nozzles are engineered to discharge a powerful stream of air, dislodging snow that has settled on the vehicle's surface, especially around door openings where it commonly accumulates. The patent emphasizes the system's ability to tackle snow before it can spill into the car, ensuring a cleaner and more protected interior environment. Although the patent does not specify the precise air pressure, flow rate, or compressor type, it implies that the force generated will be sufficient to effectively remove snow. A simple button activation is envisioned for operating this system.

Beyond the immediate benefit of a snow-free interior, this technology offers a practical advantage by safeguarding the vehicle's electronic infrastructure. Preventing melted snow and moisture from infiltrating the cabin can avert costly repairs to sensitive control units and other electrical parts. Furthermore, in areas where regulations mandate clearing snow from various parts of a vehicle before driving, such as New Jersey, this system could simplify at least part of the necessary pre-drive routine.

Given the requirement for a compressed air supply, a prime candidate for incorporating this feature could be the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain, which already includes a standard air suspension. Several other high-end Mercedes vehicles also come equipped with similar suspension systems. The patent sketches themselves hint at a Mercedes wagon, further supporting the E-Class All-Terrain as a potential recipient of this technology. However, Mercedes could also opt to integrate a dedicated air supply for the snow-removal nozzles, regardless of the vehicle's existing suspension setup.

The integration of such a system could potentially be offered as part of an optional 'Winter Package,' an existing offering for models like the E-Class All-Terrain that currently includes features like heated steering wheels and windshield washers. While patenting a technology doesn't guarantee its immediate production, it demonstrates Mercedes-Benz's commitment to innovation and addressing practical challenges faced by its customers. The prospect of such an advanced snow-clearing solution could be particularly appealing to buyers in colder climates, potentially allowing Mercedes to command a premium for this added convenience and protection.
