Metropolitan Museum of Art Celebrates New Wing's Groundbreaking with Star-Studded Rooftop Event

The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently hosted a magnificent rooftop cocktail party, marking the initiation of its new Oscar L. and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Art. This splendid September evening, bathed in the glow of the late-afternoon sun over Central Park, also signified the last occasion for such a gathering on the beloved Met rooftop in its current form, as it is set for a comprehensive transformation under the vision of architect Frida Escobedo.

The project, a colossal undertaking for the museum, was lauded by Met board co-chairs Candace Beinecke and Tony James, who expressed gratitude to the generous donors. With an impressive $670 million already secured, surpassing the construction budget, this initiative promises over 70,000 square feet of gallery space, an ethereal limestone façade, an expanded fourth-floor roof garden, and a new fifth-floor terrace offering breathtaking views. Met Director Max Hollein emphasized the wing's crucial role in connecting contemporary artistic expressions with the museum’s vast collection spanning millennia, asserting that art from 'yesterday' can profoundly resonate with works from ancient civilizations. Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, the first woman to design a wing in the Met’s history, beautifully articulated her concept, drawing inspiration from the museum's 'unfinished' facade stones as a metaphor for architecture's constant evolution and accumulation of meaning. The evening culminated in a lively performance by artist Jeffrey Gibson, transforming the ceremonial atmosphere into an impromptu musical celebration as guests participated with drums and maracas, symbolizing a harmonious blend of past, present, and future in art.
