Range Rover to Discontinue Entry-Level SUVs, Focusing on Luxury Market

Range Rover has announced a significant strategic shift, confirming the discontinuation of its more accessible SUV models, the Evoque and Velar. While production of these vehicles is set to continue until 2027, the British luxury manufacturer has no immediate plans for direct replacements. This decision marks a pivot towards an exclusive, high-end market segment, moving away from volume-driven sales. The brand intends for the forthcoming Range Rover GT and the current Range Rover Sport to assume the entry-level positions within its redefined product portfolio, albeit at considerably elevated price points. This move reflects a broader industry trend where premium brands are seeking to enhance profitability and distinctiveness.

Previously, models like the Evoque and Velar played a crucial role in expanding Range Rover's market reach, appealing to consumers desiring the brand's prestige without the flagship model's cost. The Evoque, in particular, achieved remarkable sales figures in 2014, demonstrating its widespread appeal. However, the automotive landscape is evolving rapidly, with increasing competition in more affordable segments. Range Rover's leadership has indicated a clear preference for focusing on more expensive, higher-margin vehicles. This strategy aims to create a more exclusive brand image and mitigate direct competition with burgeoning automotive manufacturers, especially those from China, which are gaining traction in various market tiers.

The company's reorientation extends beyond mere model adjustments. It is part of a larger initiative by JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) to distinctly brand Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery. While Defender and Discovery will continue to target relatively more attainable luxury market segments, Range Rover is being positioned at the pinnacle of luxury. Jaguar, another brand under the JLR umbrella, is also undergoing a transformation, rebooting as an entirely electric luxury marque, starting with the introduction of its Type 01 model. This comprehensive brand restructuring underscores a commitment to specialized market positioning and enhanced product differentiation.

The price discrepancy between the outgoing and incoming entry-level models is substantial. In the United States, the Evoque and Velar had starting prices around $49,900 and $61,600, respectively. In stark contrast, the new Range Rover GT, projected to be an electric vehicle built on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, is expected to commence pricing at approximately £100,000 (roughly $135,000). A hybrid variant on the same platform is anticipated to be priced around £90,000 ($121,000). This considerable price hike highlights Range Rover's ambition to cater to a clientele that values unparalleled luxury and is willing to invest accordingly. The brand's statement about not perceiving a price ceiling for bespoke commissions further emphasizes this dedication to ultimate exclusivity.

Range Rover's decision to phase out the Evoque and Velar and elevate its market positioning aligns with a broader strategy to prioritize profitability and exclusivity over sales volume. This involves focusing on premium, high-margin vehicles and even bespoke creations, signaling a clear move upmarket. The company's repositioning of its various brands, including the electrification of Jaguar, reflects a forward-thinking approach to navigate the competitive and changing global automotive industry landscape.
