Spock's Unconventional Path to Victory in Magic: The Gathering's Star Trek Expansion

The impending Star Trek expansion for Magic: The Gathering introduces an intriguing and unconventional method for players to secure victory. Amidst the usual array of formidable weaponry and starships, a seemingly innocuous pairing between 'Spock, Strangely Human' and the 'Make It So' sorcery card creates an infinite loop that can abruptly end a game. This strategy centers on compelling an opponent to continuously draw cards until their library is exhausted, thereby triggering one of Magic's core loss conditions. This unexpected synergy, which could even surface during prerelease events starting November 6, highlights a remarkably illogical yet effective path to triumph, diverging from typical combat-focused strategies.

This particular card interaction transforms the typically advantageous act of drawing cards into a fatal liability. 'Spock, Strangely Human,' a three-mana Izzet (red/blue) creature, is a reimagining of 'Stella Lee, Wild Card' from a previous set. Spock's abilities reward players for casting multiple spells in a single turn. His key ability allows him to tap and duplicate an instant or sorcery, provided three spells have already been cast that turn. This is where 'Make It So' comes into play. This four-mana blue sorcery offers two choices: either untap a permanent and allow a target player to draw two cards, or create a 1/1 red Officer token and draw two cards for yourself. The former option, when combined with Spock, becomes exceptionally potent.

To execute this game-ending sequence, a player must first cast two spells. Following this, 'Make It So' is cast as the third spell, with the player selecting Spock as the permanent to untap and their opponent as the recipient of two cards. As 'Make It So' remains on the stack, Spock can then tap to create a copy of it. This copy resolves first, untapping Spock and forcing the opponent to draw two cards. Since the original 'Make It So' is still awaiting resolution, Spock can tap again, restarting the process. This cycle can continue indefinitely without the need for additional mana or spells, ultimately leading to the opponent losing when they attempt to draw from an empty library, regardless of their life total or battlefield presence.

Despite its devastating potential, the likelihood of successfully deploying this combo, particularly in prerelease events, is quite low. The primary challenge lies in acquiring 'Spock, Strangely Human,' a Stardates card that replaces a common in approximately one out of every 25 Play Boosters. Given that prerelease kits contain only six Play Boosters, obtaining Spock requires a significant stroke of luck. While 'Make It So' is a common card and thus more accessible, building a strategy around such a rare reprint in a Limited format is highly impractical. Furthermore, even if both cards are obtained, the player must navigate several hurdles: Spock needs to survive long enough to activate his ability, and casting three spells in a single turn in a Limited environment can be demanding. Opponents can also disrupt the combo with removal or counterspells, and each card drawn by the opponent offers them a chance to find a response.

This unique interaction, while perhaps surprising to new players, builds upon established Commander mechanics. The original 'Stella Lee, Wild Card' has been known to enable powerful combinations since her debut, though assembling such intricate loops is considerably easier in a carefully constructed 100-card Commander deck than in a 40-card Sealed deck. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Stardates cards, though not Standard legal, can be used in the set's Limited formats, creating the rare opportunity for a known Commander combo to emerge in a more casual setting. This, alongside other new mechanics and thematic adaptations from the Star Trek universe, ensures that the expansion offers a wealth of engaging and often amusing gameplay experiences, solidifying Spock's reputation for finding victory through surprisingly logical, yet highly unconventional, means.
