In Pokémon Go, Ditto stands out as a uniquely elusive creature, primarily because it conceals its true form by mimicking other Pokémon. Players cannot simply encounter and capture Ditto directly; instead, they must identify and catch the Pokémon it is currently imitating. For example, a trainer might encounter a Diglett, and upon capture, this seemingly ordinary Pokémon could reveal itself to be Ditto, accompanied by a distinctive "Oh?" notification. The list of Pokémon that Ditto can disguise itself as changes periodically, making it crucial for trainers to stay informed about its current forms, especially when pursuing a shiny version.

As of September 23, 2025, following the "Completely Normal" event, trainers hunting for Ditto in Pokémon Go should target the following Pokémon: Mankey, Growlithe, Magnemite, Voltorb, Sentret, Teddiursa, Seedot, Surskit, Slakoth, Whismur, and Duskull. Understanding these current disguises is essential for efficient Ditto hunting. Furthermore, the pursuit of a shiny Ditto requires specific knowledge: if a player encounters a shiny version of a Pokémon that could potentially be a Ditto, it will never transform into a Ditto. This ensures that trainers will not miss out on a rare shiny capture. Finding a shiny Ditto is predominantly a matter of chance, with a higher-than-usual shiny rate, approximately one in 64, as noted by expert research groups. Initially introduced through a paid Special Research Task during the Kanto Tour in 2021, shiny Ditto is now a regular, albeit rare, in-game encounter.

Successfully capturing Ditto, especially its shiny variant, adds a layer of excitement and challenge to the Pokémon Go experience. The continuous adaptation to Ditto's ever-changing disguises fosters a dynamic and engaging pursuit for players, encouraging persistent exploration and strategic gameplay. This quest embodies the spirit of discovery and the thrill of the unexpected, reminding us that perseverance often leads to rewarding outcomes in the world of Pokémon Go.
