Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Pacific Northwest: Up to 6 Inches of Snow Expected in Oregon and Washington

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the elevated regions of Oregon and Washington, forecasting significant snowfall that could reach up to six inches. The National Weather Service cautions that snow showers will persist, making travel hazardous, particularly above 4,500 feet. Authorities emphasize the importance of following chain and traction tire mandates, with Oregon imposing substantial fines for violations.

The advisory is divided into two primary zones. The northern Oregon Cascades and southern Washington Cascades are under an advisory until Thursday morning, expecting 1 to 3 inches of snow above 4,500 feet and up to 6 inches above 6,000 feet. Key areas impacted include Government Camp, Mount St. Helens, and the Indian Heaven Wilderness. Further south, the Cascades in Marion, Linn, and Lane counties face a shorter advisory concluding Wednesday evening, with trace amounts to 3 inches of snow anticipated above 4,500 feet, particularly around Santiam Pass and Willamette Pass. Travelers should anticipate slick and dangerous road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Oregon's Department of Transportation (ODOT) enforces strict chain and traction tire rules, clearly marked at snow zone entrances. Signs instructing drivers to "Carry chains or traction tires" mean the equipment must be present in the vehicle, while "Chains required, traction tires allowed" permits passenger cars (not towing) to proceed with approved traction tires. All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles typically receive exemptions under most winter conditions, provided they meet specific criteria, including powering both axles, weighing under 6,500 pounds unloaded, and using mud/snow, all-weather radial, or traction tires on all four wheels. However, even these vehicles may be subject to chain requirements during conditional road closures, emphasizing the need for drivers to stay updated on current road conditions via resources like TripCheck for Oregon and the WSDOT real-time map for Washington.

Staying informed and prepared is crucial for safe winter travel in these mountainous regions. Adhering to weather advisories and local transportation regulations not only prevents potential fines but, more importantly, ensures the safety of all road users. Proactive measures, such as equipping vehicles with appropriate tires and carrying chains, reflect a responsible approach to navigating challenging winter conditions.
