Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo’s poignant queer epic, “La Bola Negra,” has captured the prestigious Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the BFI London Film Festival. This latest accolade adds to the growing recognition for the genre-defying drama, which delves into the interconnected lives of three generations of queer men, drawing inspiration from the rich legacy of celebrated writer Federico García Lorca. The filmmakers expressed immense gratitude for the audience's reception, highlighting the profound meaning of such public recognition.

The film, rooted in the poetic and often tragic world of Federico García Lorca, portrays a vivid tapestry of love, loss, and resilience within the queer community across different eras. Its Gala screening at the London Film Festival on October 8th was a star-studded event, attended by its directors and lead actors Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, and Penélope Cruz. The narrative intricately weaves together personal stories, offering a powerful reflection on identity and heritage. This win reinforces its critical acclaim, further bolstered by its earlier triumph of the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“La Bola Negra” has emerged as a significant force in the cinematic landscape, already posing a formidable challenge to other frontrunners like “The Odyssey” in the highly anticipated Oscars’ Best Picture race. The film’s impact extends beyond critical circles, resonating deeply with viewers, as evidenced by Guitarricadelafuente’s recollection of witnessing a young gay couple deeply moved by the film. Such emotional responses underscore the film's ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level, making its Audience Award victory particularly poignant.

In addition to “La Bola Negra”'s success, the festival also recognized Grace Harper Brighouse’s experimental documentary, “Dependence,” which received the LFF’s Audience Award for Best British Discovery. This intimate film, an exploration of loving someone with addiction, impressed audiences during its screening in the Grierson competition for documentaries. Festival director Kirsty Matheson expressed her delight at the strong community engagement and record attendance, marking a successful 70th anniversary for the event.

The BFI London Film Festival, which took place from October 7th to 18th, concluded with a series of award announcements. Juries led by notable figures such as Sam Pollard and Amir El-Masry recognized films like Sergei Loznitsa’s “Imperium” for Best Feature and Sompot Chidgasornpongse’s “9 Temples to Heaven” for Best Debut Feature, among others. The festival featured a diverse program of 258 titles from 87 countries, with 43% directed by female filmmakers, showcasing a global cinematic tapestry.

The 2026 BFI London Film Festival wrapped up with Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut,” following an opening that celebrated the European premiere of Andrew Scott’s “Elsinore.” Throughout its run, the festival presented a variety of dazzling galas, including “Behemoth!”, “Ink,” “Wild Horse Nine,” “Artificial,” “Paper Tiger,” “Possible Love,” and “Bunker.” Many leading awards contenders were featured, and the festival provided a platform for insightful discussions with industry luminaries such as Andrew Scott, John Malkovich, Javier Bardem, Naomi Ackie, Ava DuVernay, Cynthia Erivo, Sofia Coppola, and Danny Boyle.

The BFI London Film Festival's 70th edition was a vibrant celebration of global cinema, showcasing a diverse array of films and talents. The recognition of “La Bola Negra” with the Audience Award not only highlights its powerful narrative and artistic merit but also underscores its resonance with a broad spectrum of viewers. The festival's commitment to showcasing international and diverse voices continues to solidify its position as a leading cultural event.
