Movistar Plus is embarking on a significant expansion of its programming, revealing an ambitious lineup of new projects spearheaded by celebrated Spanish filmmakers. This strategic initiative underscores the company's commitment to bolstering the Spanish audiovisual industry and offering a diverse range of exclusive content to its subscribers. The forthcoming productions, which include works from Fernando León, J.A. Bayona, and Paco León, mark a new era for the platform under its recently appointed leadership.
Under the guidance of new CEO Alfonso Gómez Palacio and content director Juan Andrés García Romero, Movistar Plus is making a substantial investment in Spanish storytelling. A key highlight of this renewed strategy is the pledge to release a new Spanish film every week throughout the year. This commitment is complemented by an earlier announcement to increase the annual output of original Spanish series from eight to sixteen, effectively doubling its production volume. This series, created, written, and directed by León de Aranoa, will star Belén Cuesta. Additionally, J.A. Bayona, director of "Society of the Snow," is set to executive produce two new non-fiction ventures. The Moriarti team, acclaimed for "The Endless Trench," will helm a fiction project featuring a stellar Spanish cast including Anna Castillo, Pol López, and Eduard Fernández. Daniel Monzón, director of "Cell 211," will direct "250 Metros," an original film produced with Ikiru Films and Basoilarraren, starring Luis Tosar.
Further enhancing the diverse slate, Sandra Romero, recognized for her work on "Where the Silence Passes," will direct "Una visita familiar," another Movistar Plus original movie. Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor are collaborating on a comedy project starring David Verdaguer and Paula Malia. Paco León, the acclaimed co-creator, co-writer, director, and star of "Arde Madrid," a breakout hit for Movistar Plus, also has a new project in development with the platform.
