National Film and Television School and Sean Connery Foundation Partner to Establish Edinburgh Filmmaking Hub
A significant collaboration has emerged between the esteemed National Film and Television School (NFTS) and the Sean Connery Foundation, leading to the creation of a pioneering Scottish filmmaking institution in Edinburgh. This new entity, named the NFTS Sean Connery Institute, is set to commence operations in 2027 with a clear mission: to nurture and advance the next generation of Scottish talent in the film and television sectors, equipping them for enduring careers. The initiative is strategically designed to bolster the careers of aspiring filmmakers and amplify Scotland's diverse narratives on both national and international stages.
The establishment of this innovative institute marks a pivotal moment for Scottish cinema. Located in central Edinburgh, the facility is anticipated to open its doors within the next eighteen months. Beyond its core function of housing NFTS's comprehensive training programs, it will also serve as a vibrant cultural hub, regularly hosting public screenings, expert masterclasses, engaging discussions, and various cinematic events. This integrated approach aims to foster a dynamic environment for learning and creative exchange within the Scottish film community.
This venture represents a natural progression of the NFTS's involvement in Scotland, which spans nearly a decade under the banner of NFTS Scotland. It also significantly expands upon the achievements of the highly successful Sean Connery Talent Lab. Launched in 2023 with the support of the Sean Connery Foundation, BBC Film, and numerous other partners, the Talent Lab is an intensive, year-long development program. It brings together promising Scottish writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, and editors, providing them with the essential skills and mentorship needed to thrive in the industry. The program is currently on its third cohort, demonstrating its sustained impact.
Since its inception, the Talent Lab has provided invaluable support to 75 filmmakers, offering rigorous workshops, personalized mentoring, comprehensive story development, and hands-on filmmaking experience. A testament to its efficacy, the twelve films produced through the Lab to date have all premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2025 and 2026, showcasing the burgeoning talent emerging from Scotland.
Jon Wardle, Director of the National Film and Television School, emphasized the profound importance of this development for the NFTS and its long-term commitment to Scotland. He noted that the school's initial engagement in Scotland nine years prior was driven by a simple yet ambitious goal: to extend NFTS's world-class training to the Scottish screen industry and address its specific skill requirements. Over this period, thousands have benefited from the training, revealing the rich pool of talent across the nation. Wardle further stated that by establishing a permanent presence in Edinburgh, the NFTS is solidifying its roots and pledging enduring support to help Scotland's emerging creatives forge sustainable careers. Jason and Stephane Connery, speaking on behalf of the Sean Connery Foundation, echoed this sentiment, highlighting their father's deep belief in fairness, diligence, and supporting those with talent. They stressed his understanding that while talent is universal, opportunity is not, and that those who exhibit determination should have the chance to fulfill their potential. Sir Sean's immense pride in his Scottish heritage means he would have been delighted by this expanded partnership with the NFTS and the strengthened ties with his hometown of Edinburgh.
