Nexus Mods Implements Strict AI Content Disclosure Policy

Nexus Mods, a prominent hub for game modifications, has unveiled a fresh set of guidelines concerning the incorporation of artificial intelligence in user-created content. Aligning with a philosophy akin to Valve's, the platform has opted against a complete ban on AI-driven creations. Instead, it now mandates that all mod authors explicitly declare the nature and degree of AI involvement in their submissions.

The new policy, effective immediately, requires mod developers to categorize their work as either predominantly "AI-generated," indicating significant AI production, or "AI assisted," for projects where AI played a supportive role in human-led development. A third option allows for declaring no AI involvement whatsoever. This transparency extends to all aspects of a mod, including promotional materials, ensuring users are fully informed about the content they download. Furthermore, Nexus Mods has pledged not to utilize any uploaded mods for AI training purposes itself, nor will it sell user-created content to third parties for such applications. Authors are also given control to specify whether external entities may use their mods for AI training, with a default setting requiring explicit permission.

To facilitate a smooth transition, a 60-day grace period has been initiated, allowing mod authors ample time to review and update their existing uploads to comply with the new disclosure requirements. This period commenced on November 3rd, 2026, and will conclude on January 2nd, 2027. Nexus Mods has confirmed that these regulations apply universally to all mods on the site, regardless of their upload date, emphasizing the platform's commitment to consistent standards across its vast library. While acknowledging that universal adherence to these new rules might not be immediate, the platform's owner, Victor 'Foledinho' Folmann, expressed a preference for open disclosure and regulated usage over a futile attempt at complete suppression, promising clear moderation standards and consequences for non-compliance.

In this evolving digital landscape, platforms like Nexus Mods are navigating the complex intersection of creativity and technology. By embracing transparency and empowering creators, they are fostering an environment where innovation can thrive responsibly. This forward-thinking approach not only protects intellectual property but also cultivates a more informed and trustworthy community, ultimately benefiting both creators and users alike.
