Nordic Film and TV Awards Honor Prominent Talents Including Lasse Hallström and Lena Olin

The Freyas, officially known as the Nordic Film and TV Awards, recently unveiled its first group of distinguished honorees and award recipients. This inaugural event aims to celebrate the collective achievements of the Nordic audiovisual culture and the talented individuals who have brought Nordic narratives to a global audience. The ceremony, set to occur in Helsinki on September 22, will gather prominent creative talents and industry experts from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, highlighting the region's significant impact on the international film and television landscape.

Among the celebrated personalities is Swedish director Lasse Hallström, recognized for his pioneering work and successful career that spans both sides of the Atlantic. Hallström's breakthrough film, "My Life as a Dog" (1985), garnered him two Oscar nominations and paved the way for an extensive international career that includes acclaimed works like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Chocolat," and "The Hundred-Foot Journey." His journey exemplifies the global reach of Nordic filmmaking talent.

Fellow Swedish artist Lena Olin is also being honored for her illustrious acting career, which underscores the international appeal of Nordic performers. From her early roles in Ingmar Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander" and "After the Rehearsal," to her international debut in Philip Kaufman's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," Olin has built a distinguished filmography in both European and American cinema and television, including memorable performances in "Enemies, A Love Story" and "Chocolat."

Danish actress Trine Dyrholm will receive the Outstanding Nordic Actor (in a Series) award at The Freyas for her compelling portrayal of Ditte Jensen in Benedikt Erlingsson’s series “The Danish Woman.” Dyrholm's career boasts an array of significant roles in films such as Thomas Vinterberg’s “The Celebration” and “The Commune,” for which she earned the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlinale, as well as Susanne Bier’s “In a Better World.” Her recent work includes "Margrete: Queen of the North" and "The Girl With the Needle."

Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will be presented with an Outstanding Nordic Actor (in a Series) Freya Award for his leading role in the Icelandic-Finnish production “Reykjavik Fusion,” which he also executive produced. Internationally, Ólafsson is well-known for his part in the Nordic noir series “Trapped,” and his appearances in major productions like “True Detective,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” and “Severance.”

Swedish-Lebanese actor and filmmaker Fares Fares is set to receive a Freya Award for Outstanding Nordic Actor (in a Film) for his performance in “Arkipelag,” directed by Alex Schulman. Fares gained recognition with "Jalla! Jalla!" and has since featured in prominent films such as "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," in addition to series like "Chernobyl" and "Westworld." Icelandic actress Ebba Katrín Finnsdóttir, a recipient of Iceland's Gríman Award for Actress of the Year in 2020, will also be celebrated for her recent roles in series like “Húsó” and “The Danish Woman.”

The Freyas also shine a spotlight on the emerging generation of Nordic artists making waves on the international stage. Finnish actress Laura Birn is being honored for her breakthrough international career, particularly her acclaimed role as Demerzel in Apple TV+'s epic science-fiction series “Foundation.” Birn's continued presence in the series across its initial three seasons and her recent appearance alongside Javier Bardem in "Beloved" at the Cannes Film Festival underscore her global impact. Meanwhile, Thea Sofie Loch Næss represents Norway's rising acting talent, having gained international attention as Skade in Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom” and showcasing her versatility in various Norwegian and international productions.

This inaugural ceremony not only acknowledges the individual brilliance of these actors and directors but also serves as a testament to the robust and innovative nature of the Nordic film and television industry, whose collaborative spirit and distinctive storytelling continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
