Jannes Callens' documentary, titled "The Technological Sublime," presented at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest, meticulously investigates the unseen physical and human foundations that underpin artificial intelligence. This film embarks on a journey through AI's complex supply chain, starting from quartz mining operations in the Appalachian region, moving through chip manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, lithium extraction sites in Chile, the vast undersea cable networks, and finally, to the digital labor performed by click-workers in Kenya. Through this expansive exploration, the documentary endeavors to expose the true environmental and societal repercussions of a technology often perceived as purely abstract and ethereal.

The director, Callens, expressed a profound fascination with subjects that defy easy visual representation, noting that AI is frequently discussed as an abstract and invisible entity. However, his extensive research brought to light a highly tangible ecosystem that exists beneath the idealized facade of "green" AI. He observed that typical online searches for AI predominantly yield images of humanoid robots, and it was this conspicuous absence of visuals depicting the underlying infrastructure that propelled him to delve into this topic.

Callens emphasizes that his film is primarily an artistic creation, offering a unique opportunity to address a compelling subject through a rich audiovisual medium. His objective is to introduce a more nuanced perspective into the ongoing discourse surrounding AI, showcasing the fundamental marvels of technological advancement while simultaneously acknowledging the profound material, ecological, and human expenditures involved. He seeks to demystify AI by illustrating its profound connection to physical resources and human labor, thereby challenging simplistic notions of its impact.

Steven Dhoedt, the delegate producer for the documentary, has a long-standing personal interest in emerging technologies. He recalls his earlier documentary, "Inside the Metaverse" (2010), which examined the burgeoning enthusiasm for virtual worlds long before major tech companies like Facebook rebranded. Dhoedt draws a parallel to the current fervor surrounding AI, noting that for many, the technology remains largely conceptual. He was immediately captivated by Callens' distinctive approach, which he praised for taking a timeless and grounded perspective rather than a sensationalist one, believing this is precisely the kind of film about AI that is crucial in the contemporary landscape.

The film's production, spanning four continents, necessitates further investment and partnerships. Belgian broadcaster VRT has already committed to the project, and discussions are currently underway with additional European broadcasters. Dhoedt views the Taiwan Creative Content Fest as a vital platform to introduce this film to Asian audiences. Collaborating with James Chia-Hao Hsu of Reel Asia Pictures, their Taiwanese partner, the team also hopes to engage with distributors and sales agents during this stage. "The Technological Sublime" is a collaborative effort between Brussels-based Visualantics and Cobra Films, Paris-based Tag Film, and Taipei-based Reel Asia Pictures.

Ultimately, "The Technological Sublime" serves as a critical examination of the hidden costs and complex realities behind artificial intelligence. It urges viewers to look beyond the slick interfaces and perceived weightlessness of AI, revealing the laborious and resource-intensive processes that make this advanced technology possible, and prompting a deeper consideration of its comprehensive impact on our world.
