Winter Weather Advisory Issued: Up to 12 Inches of Snow and 50 MPH Gusts This Weekend

California's elevated regions are bracing for a significant winter storm this weekend, with weather advisories predicting considerable snowfall and powerful wind gusts. Travelers, particularly those navigating Interstate 80, should prepare for adverse road conditions and the potential necessity of snow chains. This weather event is expected to bring up to a foot of snow in higher elevations and strong winds reaching 50 miles per hour, making driving hazardous.

Multiple weather advisories are in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday morning, covering different sections of the Sierra Nevada. The National Weather Service in Reno anticipates 2 to 5 inches of snow in the Greater Lake Tahoe Area above 7,000 feet, with up to 9 inches on the highest peaks and gusts up to 50 mph. Mono County is forecast to receive 3 to 6 inches above 8,000 feet, and up to 12 inches on the highest summits, accompanied by 45 mph gusts that could cause tree damage. Meanwhile, NWS Sacramento projects up to 8 inches for the Northern Sierra above 7,000 feet, including critical routes like Highway 50 and Interstate 80, with some areas possibly seeing up to 12 inches. Snow levels are expected to drop significantly Saturday night, intensifying the snowfall from Saturday evening into Sunday. Further south, NWS Hanford forecasts 4 to 7 inches between 7,500 and 9,500 feet, and up to 11 inches above 9,500 feet, impacting national parks such as Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia.

California's Department of Transportation (Caltrans) enforces a tiered system for snow chain requirements, known as R-1, R-2, and R-3. Under R-1, vehicles, excluding passenger cars and light-duty trucks (under 6,000 pounds gross weight) equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels, must have chains. R-2 extends this requirement to most cars, exempting only four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. R-3 mandates chains or traction devices for all vehicles without exception. Snow tires are identifiable by specific sidewall markings like 'MS', 'M/S', 'M+S', or 'mud and snow'. Even if a vehicle is exempt, state regulations require all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles to carry traction devices in designated chain control zones. Failing to comply with chain requirements can result in citations and fines from the California Highway Patrol. Once chains are installed, speed limits are reduced to 25 or 30 mph, potentially extending travel times. Real-time chain control information is available via Caltrans QuickMap and the 511 service.

The weekend's harsh weather conditions necessitate heightened caution for all drivers in California's mountainous regions. Adhering to chain controls and monitoring updated weather and road information is crucial for safe travel during this period of heavy snow and strong winds.
